As the current economic situation continues to take a toll on all of us, we remind everyone that the potential for a serious animal welfare issue exists. National financial reports indicate that approximately 1 in 171 homes in the country is in danger of foreclosure as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis. 63% of U.S. homes have at least one pet, which means an estimated 500,000 to one million cats and dogs are at risk of becoming homeless.

While over 50% of pet owners consider their petsmembers of the family, and go to great lengths to continue providing proper care, there are times when that is no longer possible.  The number one reason given today for giving up a beloved pet is the need to relocate to a smaller home or apartment that does not allow pets.

What can we do to help?

  • Landlords – relax your no-pet policies for well-behaved, housebroken pets.
  • Adopt a homeless pet or foster the pet of a friend or family member in need of assistance.
  • Donate used blankets, toys, towels, crates or dog beds to local animal shelters.
  • Foster pets waiting to find forever homes.
  • Contribute money to local animal shelters.
  • Help community members struggling to take care of their pets.

If you are in need of assistance with your pet:

  • Check with friends, family or neighbors for temporary foster care until you get back on your feet.
  • Post a plea for assistance at the local vet and on community bulletin boards.
  • Run an ad (or post notices on local bulletin boards) for a new home for your pet.

Everyone is feeling the pinch of the economic crisis, but none more so than community animal shelters and rescue groups – with more pets (but fewer donations) coming in every day.  If you really want to help, forego a few unnecessary luxuries and donate the money to help your local animal shelter!  The need has never been greater.
